I recall hearing something about a Gold member RSS feed. Any update on that? (no biggie if it isn't ready - I'm just curious).

The guy working on it is having some issues with getting the shows to order by creation date. The feed is below.. but I haven't moved all of the shows in the folder yet since we are still testing. Once it's ready, it will be posted on the front page.. however.. the podcasts will only be downloadable by gold members with right username and pass. Which all gold members will have knowledge of upon release and provided I have their username already in the database.

Again, please download responsibly. I am not earning enough to pay for a $30,000/month bandwidth bill. If it's abused.. I will have to shut it down permanently.

Here's the url: More shows to come once it's fixed.

Yeah.. we are working on a script that will strip invalid characters before it is published.

Firefox shows me the feed with no errors though and it can be read by most aggregators.

One of the important things you have to tell users is that they should "catch up" the feed before automatically downloading. Otherwise most RSS software will download everything.

Will it be just new stuff or most, if not all, the entire archive? I would suggest just the new stuff for an RSS feed. If you maintain a method of downloading the old stuff, the RSS feed page can stay small. Hits on the feed page itself can add up.

BTW, I'm flabbergasted by your server costs. I had no idea it was that high.

Thanks Reg. You're right, Firefox does work to show the feed. My new computer went down a few weeks ago and I'm using an old one with Win2k, which doesn't support new versions of IE. That's probably why it didn't work.

No, no.. I was saying that it could easily get that high it it's abused. However.. and rss feed of the recent stuff just may be the best idea, but I'd like them all to be available. Perhaps I can set a download limit to per IP each day. That would stop abuse.

Just a thought as far as bandwidth concerns go:

Could you host the files as torrents and then have people who want to download them download it via bittorrent? That would cut down the bandwidth costs on your end since people who are downloading via torrent also upload pieces of the files to others who are also downloading from that torrent.

Set the files up on a private tracker so that only specified users can download the files using your tracker.

One possible tracker implementation

Bittorrent is an excellent idea, but the only problem will be the syncing of downloaded content to the various players. iTunes doesn't support bittorrent, though players like Miro do. I would certainly use it, but there would be no way to know automatically about new content via the podcast rss readers.

I know iTunes is very popular with the Windows and Mac using crowd, but several players support this features. Personally I like Banshee it will support torrent downloads in the upcoming verion as well support Windows, OS X, Linux and BSD.

I see this support coming in more and more places as a result of people wanting to distribute video podcasts which is rather unreasonable to do centralised. iTunes will likely follow suit as the market pushes for it. I would love to see an alternative feed with torrents, if only to offload some of Reggies costs by seeding the goodness and hopefully help drive adoption this way of torrent payload podcasts.

Banshee can subscribe to torrent feeds? If that is true, I'll surely be switching. I know azureus is coming along with these types of features as well, but it cannot sync with any media player (yet).

The support is not in a released version but here is a screencast showing it off:

http://www.monsoon-project.org/jaws/data/files/BansheeTorrent.ogv

1.4 is set to be released on the 10th of November, there is currently a string freeze so it is not going to be in that one but shortly there after I suspect. There are also some semantics to work out, such as how to set the default share ratio and what the defaults should be.
