CBS) A new documentary examines religious discrimination in the U.S. military. Should American forces be fighting for God as well as country? Here's
Susan Spencer of 48 Hours
.
When it comes to the role of religion in the military, a famous saying from World War II seems to sum things up:
"There are no atheists in foxholes."
Immortalized in the 1942 film "Wake Island," the line reinforces the idea that there' s just nothing quite like bombs and bullets to convert a non-believer.
Whoever decided that owes Jeremy Hall an apology.
Army Specialist Hall was a turret gunner who has been deployed to Iraq twice. His Humvee came under fire - a bullet nearly killed him - but he didn't find God, and he wasn't looking
If this is a "Christian Nation" and soldiers are fighting for Jesus, then why are non-Christians of any other label allowed to join? Why do non-Christians pay taxes for a military that promotes Christianity over all other religions?
The truth is that there has never been, even during the fight to form this country, a litmus test for being a patriot, and nowhere in the oath of office, or in the military oath, is any person mandated to swear an oath to the Christian god, or any god for that matter.
The founders did not fight to set up a Christian run government, with guests welcome, they fought so that such personal beliefs would not be mandated on all, but that the individual would be able to think for themselves, which is the core of freedom, which is what every soldier should be fighting for.
Back in 2001, I became friends with an atheist who had served in Europe in WW2. He, despite his service, is not considered a true patriot. He died a few years back, never seeing the equality he wanted in defending the Constitution.
If Christians want their own country, then they should not be allowing service by non-Christians, nor should they be collecting taxes from non-Christians. But since they do, then OUR government has a duty to keep all oaths and symbols neutral to honor those who bravely served no matter the label.
TO ALL SERVING, not just atheists, but Jews and Muslims or Buddhists or whatever. RAISE YOUR VOICES, if you serve then you have the right to demand that OUR military stop favoring Christianity above other religions. It is your service that matters too.
We are not a theocracy and military uniforms do not mandate crosses on them. OUR military is NOT Jesus owned and it is up to those who serve outside the Christian label to demand the same equality they are fighting for.

It is definately interesting that the military, a strongly religious group, also has a large majority of soldiers from small towns, many of them in the south.

I've always put it down to the strong military tradition in the south. Conservative bias maybe?

Yeah, maybe. If people call the military a religious organization it's due mostly to those people, I would think.
