I must admit before I really got to know the religion, I was one of the ignorant who thought these people worshiped the Christian Satan. However I do realize now that the word "satan" not only refers to a devil type being but it also means "outside the norm" or away from everyone else. I consider Satanism to be a form of atheism even though it's an actual religion where they have high priests and actual rituals.
With all that said, I can respect this religion for their forward thinking beliefs, but I think it seems rather self-gratifying and selfish. I even listened to a podcast of a Satanist and the guy was such an asshole, it just turned me off completely.
I hate being lumped in with people such as this in the Christian mind. I don't think they can see the difference between a secular humanist and a Satanist. To them, we're just all atheists.
Now I'm sure there are some nice guy Satanists out there. But the fact that the credo of the religion is "do what's best for yourself at the expense of others" and "gratify yourself first" just puts me off entirely.
Any thoughts?

The only satanists are christians...
Satan is a character within christianity (as well as Judaism, Islam, etc.) and since atheists reject religion its completely ridiculous for them to be associated with satanists.
I wouldn't consider it a form of atheism at all, it's just a silly revolt against equally silly christian claims. Some of their ideas sound reasonable, but in my opinion its mostly an inconsistent and pretty shallow compound of pseudo-wisdom. It has partly grown into a form of philosophy but it will never outgrow its origins as long as stays "anti".
The only reason I can find for respecting satanism is that the devil-character isn't quite as evil as the biblical god XD .
But it's in cases like these where I think that the newly "invented" term
brights
may not be such a bad idea after all.

Is there anything such as Charles Baudelairean Satanism?
"Personally, I think that the unique and supreme delight lies in the certainty of doing 'evil' -- and men and women know from birth that all pleasure lies in evil."
-Charles Baudelaire.

Well, not to play Devil's advocate ... (pause for bad joke moan)... it could be argued that everything we do is for self gratification. Even the Xian donating all their money to charity is gunning for some distant self gratification. If altruism didn't on some level gratify the person would they keep doing it? The part about doing what's best for yourself at the expense of others?... weeellll that's fairly indefensible.
