Hi all,
After being a subscriber for a few years I thought that I should finally take a look at the infidelguy forum.
My background is in computers. I spent a long time in Perth, Australia working in the biz and making money. Now I have effectively retired, and have been travelling in Asia for the last 3 years.
I have been an atheist from perhaps 12 years of age. I recall debating with a Sunday school teacher the Roman siege of Masada, where I supported the Romans in their suppression of a Jewish revolt! The idea of a 'god' always seemed strange and silly to me. "Where did god come from?"
Over the years I have joined several groups and read a lot of good books on the subject. Have read all of messieurs Dawkins and Shermer books. Love giving these and similar to people as gifts! haha Sometimes surprising results occur—'I never knew that!'.
Over the years I have been sometimes a militant atheist, sometimes not so much.
What I have found on my travels is the appalling high level of superstition in SEA. Ghosts, spirits, magic, fortune telling, charms--all are found in great number. As for Buddhism, in the west we see the 'purified', abstract (nice) form. In the east it operates in the same manner as any other religion. Amulets are a major money spinner for monks and monasteries. Scams all around.
Regards,
Ian Bacon
