I think it's funny when christians say that god is a perfect being.Because if god is such a perfect being then why did he create us why does he need to be worshiped.Or why does he want us to have faith in him.Or other things like if he is so perfect why does he want to have a relationship with us if he already knows everything about us even before he created us.If there was a perfect being or creator he would not have created us or for that matter created the universe he would just exist. The way i see it is when christians say that god is perfect their just basically saying that it's impossible for a god to exist.Thats just the way i see it though.Im really interested in hearing what you guys think about that well peace.Sorry for the bad typing. Cool

Another thing: the bible's old and new testaments are in sharp contrast when it comes to philosophy. In the old testament, god is wrathful, vengeful, and he often used retribution. In the new testament, Jesus demonstrates god's love through turning the other cheek, showing wisdom and mercy, and forgiving everybody of their sins. A major theme of the new testament is forgiveness. So why did god change philosophy halfway through the bible? Did he see fit to change his message? Was he not right the first time? That right there would trump the assumption that god is all knowing. If someone argues that he changed all of this because society was changing, why would that make any sense? Isn't god supposed to have a set moral code and way to heaven? If society changed to valuing sex, drinking, and debauchery, would god change himself too? I've never heard anyone make that argument, but I'm just anticipating. Another hole in the omniscient statement is the flood story. After the flood, god was sad and resolved never to do the same again. If god is all knowing, then why did he feel remorse? He would feel remorse if he regretted his decision. He resolved to never do it again, so he must have been questioning his decision. This indicates that god was flawed in that he made the wrong decision and is thus fallible.

It's really not until Aquinas' Summa Theologica that the concept of God being perfect and unchangable really became the dominate Xtian line of thought. In large part that's why the church was against the laity reading the bible since, amoung other contridictions, it is full of examples of god's failibility.

I think 'perfect' is ultimately a meaningless idea in this context - it really can only be applied to specific attributes, and not all kinds of attributes at that.

Think of just applying it to a human being - what, for example would be a perfect size, shape, skin color, etc?

You might want to define it as 'without flaw', but I don't think that helps much, since 'flaw' can be very subjective. One person's commitment to a position can be seen as stubbornness from another point of view.

I think you can only have 'perfection' in the sense of exactly matching some clearly defined state. A perfect circle can be conceived, as exactly matching a simple definition. Unless the attribute can be as precisely defined as a mathematical construct, I think we have a very subjective term.

Perfect, omnipotent, omniscient, etc, all attributes which can't really be pinned down to meaningful actual attributes of a actual entity.

This just shows that perfection is a highly subjective notion, a concept invented by humans for the benefit of other humans.

God has never done the things that a Good God would do. If he really did inspire religion as religious people claim then he has done things that a good God would never do. If God inspired religion the stood by while religion commited atrocities in his name then he is responsible for religious atrocities in his name.

For more on what God is really like if he exists see this web site:
