This will probably annoy sjc that someone is daring to stand up to the government, but there are still remnants of freedom in the USA that haven't been stomped out yet. In this case, the state of Maine is daring to oppose the federal government. Imagine that - someone thinking the government is wrong.

REAL IDiocy

Quote:
Maine’s state legislature "RESOLVED" almost unanimously last week that it will "refuse... to implement the REAL ID Act...." As if that weren’t enough, it "implores the United States Congress to repeal the REAL ID Act..."

What?

Go ahead and re-read it. Took me a few tries, too. Such stunningly good news knocks one’s comprehension for a loop. It’s like sunshine at midnight: so freak a treat that one can only blink and gibber. When was the last time we had news this good? Heck, when was the last time we had good news, period, from the political world?

The REAL ID Act, for those of you lacking the time and stomach to analyze Leviathan’s droppings, might better be titled "Papers, Please." Passed in 2005, due to take effect in 2008, it finishes the job of turning Amerika into a police state by making driver’s licenses into national ID cards.

The Act requires all licenses to carry the same information, whether they’re issued in Alaska, Florida, or somewhere in between. Those who concede that free people should ask Their Rulers’ permission before driving cars they own on roads they pay for probably won’t object to providing their name, address, date of birth, gender, a "digital photograph," and their signature – the usual data that good citizens are conditioned to yield without thinking.

...continues

There you have it. Much to the chagrin of government worshipers sjc, we still stand up for ourselves sometimes in the USA.

I believe Montana or Idaho has done the same thing.

This, combined with states essentially nullifying Kelo v. City of New London, is hopefully indicative of a larger sea change.

The only annoyance here are holes like you, and still only a very minor one at that.

I'm the one who brought up the topic of YOUR government FORCING your own citizens to prove their citizenship to get back into their OWN country and how stupid it was. I'm also the one who said that the government is there to serve us. While you fear your government ours fears us.

The Canadian government isn't the one doing this. In fact we're getting more and more freedoms and rights since Canada is far closer to being a true democracy while you're losing yours under your republic. This was no different than during the McCarthy Era. Now, you can't say that they were socialists. If you do than that just shows you more of a fool than you already are.

Here's another important fact, you're a moron. But than again, like all of your kind you're quite deluded. As deluded as any theist, but in this (mental) case you're religious delusion is based on politics.

You've become quite the anti-social retard.

Excellent! Could you please tell me what new freedoms, and rights are we getting here in Canada?

Well now you've done it, Jack. You're about to be called a loser and a hater of Canada and all sorts of other insults. Mind you, I personally have no problem with insults per se and insofar as they are used properly. That is to say--either they are used with an argument or against someone whose arguments you've already thoroughly annihilated. However, sjc simply makes blatant assertions and then insults anyone who challenges his assertions.

Also, what's with the picture of Layton, if you don't mind my asking?

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I am so pleased to be here, and I am very exited to hear the good news about Canada. I must admit that I'm beside myself with anticipation of having my question answered.

Well I wouldn't hold my breath. SJC's "arguments" usually follow this form:

"You oppose government program X? You're obviously just a poor-hating antisocial prick then. You libertarians are a bunch of fundies. By the way, America sucks."

I don't understand. SJC said that we were getting new rights and freedoms all the time. I find this very exiting, and I wish to be informed of what wonderful new rights and freedoms we Canadians have to look forward to. This is good news. Why would he not wish to share this information?

I admit that I'm not very good at the inter-net, so searching for information is difficult for me. I hope that he was not offended that I am so ignorant.

That would be a very rude way to talk to another person. Surely you jest.

Because he pulled it from his ass and would prefer that no one get wise to him--except that we all are.

Gay marriage, for one obvious in-the-news one. It's also slowly spreading here in the US.

The rudeness is mutual. It unfortunately strikes me more as a game both sides are playing. The way this site is at the moment, SJC appears to be in the minority and may actually be. But he and I are see things very similarly. The main difference between him and me as far as I see is that he stomachs the trash-talk more than I care to.

I doubt anyone here actually thinks SJC supports these kinds of ID cards. It definitely smacks of totalitarian control tactics, one of many that the current US administration would like in place...some of which are already in place unfortunately.

I'd count the (now stalled) recent move toward drug legalization as well.

My goal is discussion and argument, but also to convince others of the benefits of a liberal society. Consistently showing how he (SJC) has no argument beyond empty rhetoric and insults works toward that end.

Although usually fraught with basic errors of economics, you actually do make arguments, unlike SJC who simply insults anyone evil and uncaring enough to question his beliefs, and then runs away.

Like virtually all of the policies you and he advocate. As Hayek said: "A claim for a position of material equality can only be met by a government with totalitarian powers."
