Hi everyone, and you too Hurtman. Thanks for urging me to come back here!
I must admit, I am feeling somewhat alone again lately.
Nice new page Reggie. Feels like home again.
Yesterday I got so mad. I had to take my car to the garage, and this elderly chap, drove me home while my car was there to be looked at.
On the way, he tells me how he lived in New Guinea for 30 years. Being itnerested in such things, I mentioned my 7 years in (Tibet?).. no.. Singapore LOL
My first question was, okay, so what did you do there?
He was a mechanic, and also a "preacher on the side"... I wanted to say, "oh you mean like, drinking on the side?"... LOL
I didn't show any interest, but he starts quoting bible verses, from Paul, how Paul was a tent maker, and like Paul, he still earned money and "preached on the side" and was like, involved with missionaries.
Now, did I want to know all this???? No!
He then says he owns some land and wants to build units, so that the "misho's"... (what a term to use really), can stay and rest when they come home. He said, the "good Lord" gave them this opportunity of how they managed to get this piece of land. I said, are you sure it wasn't just luck, or coincidence?
NOOOO... he said..... oh no.. it's all the Lord's doing!
I got so angry once back in the house. I just got so mad... I didn't ask to be preached at... I didn't tell him to stop believing in the tooth fairy did I?
Why do they insist on throwing this stuff at us? They talk as if we are ALL christians, or they assume we are, or they think they are "spreading the word, or whatever! ... it makes me mad.... and I was angry all day. Now isn't that silly?
I ask you, why does it make me angry? It also depressed me... I felt like he violated my person, my thoughts, my own world view without first checking to see what it was. I'm sure he was a JW. The way they take for granted that, this is how it is... without question!! It makes me sick! Aagghhh!!!
Not long ago I interviewed a woman who was going to house sit for my cats while I was away. She also started talking like this. She praised Al Gore's Global Video, (which lacks so many facts by the way), and kept telling me how, "it's all in God's plan".... I gave her the boot...
Get out of my house!!!! Religion should be kept to yourself. Only if people ask, should they embark on this subject. But no, they can't help themselves. We all need to be saved you know... it just offends me to no end.
Thanks for letting me rant and rave once again. I have now gotten it off my chest. I should be used to all this by now, and if it wasn't that I would make more enemies than friends, I would speak up more, but it's just no use.
I live in a small town of 6,000 inhabitants, and 99.9% are either religious, or into Raiki, or some other kind of healing, cystals, or angels.. it goes on and on.. I have not yet met a fellow atheist in my town. Then there's the Muslims!!
cheers
sunamiren
(edit) Oh, I wanted to say, I really enjoyed the debate video Christopher HItchens vs Dinesh D'Souza. It was so good I watched it twice. Keeps me sane.

I think they do a lot of what you're angry about because they're constantly having to reaffirm their beliefs because they fly in the face of reality
Like when someone says something that they WANT to believe, but its clearly false you tell them, "Uh yeah... keep telling yourself that".
Well, i think they "keep telling themselves that" their superstition is really based on facts and reality instead of wishful thinking.
Makes me think of apologists who never shut up about having a "personal relationship" with Jesus when at best its a sort of metaphorical thing and not at all a typical "relationship". Jesus ends up just being an imaginary friend for adults.

Yes, and that always really amazes me when you see people 60 and older still talking like this.
I recently had a conversation with my Christian friends, (elderly couple), who are lovely people, (they don't preach at me) but when we discussed Islam, and the cruelty they portray, not only the Taleban, but what is in the Koran etc.. I said that you have the same cruelty in the Old Testament.
They couldn't answer my questions they just said I need to talk to their priest, he can answer them better... yeah right!
Because they don't like to be challenged where they have to think for themselves. Why can't they answer me themselves? I think they are afraid I may shake their "faith?".....
Just like I don't like being preached at, they don't like being confronted with reality and if you are past 70, it's not for me to take away their belief that they will go to heaven.
Most of the time, their association is due to the fellowship, and you can't blame them for that.
I need to belong to atheists, just like they need to belong to their believers.
It's a strange feeling though when Christians are so nice to you, and you always have to wonder if they are not trying to "lure you in".. and then make the "pounce"...
I know these people like me, and I also know that they think, "If only I had Jesus" then I would be perfect.... for them!!
As time goes by, they mention religion more and more, especially other religions, Islam, Catholics etc.... but their own? that is the right one.
There are too many of them and we can't escape them

Thats one of the most sickening things about christians and christianity. Really bugs me because its dishonest and disingenuous.
I glad that none of my coworkers are like that (Aside from family, work is where I encounter the most religious people). Our office is diverse enough that I think no one wants to piss anyone else off. (We have mormons, catholics, fundamentalists and even a Quaker)

Hello sunamiren,
Great to see you here.
You know, the more I have read and studied up on religion, the more confident I have grown and am ready and even WELCOME Xtians or believers in gods to mention (impose) their beliefs on me. It has gotten to the point where wit kicks in and my memory reminds me of something just right to say for the occasion/person. I'm polite, but challenging in my questioning or commenting. My goal is to plant the seed of doubt in any believer's head.
I make a point of laying out my morals, then later I might mention that I am an atheist. However, I can let them know that believing in the Bible might be irrational/illogical without even having mention anything about my atheism. I am proud to say that I am an atheist though, as nervous as I may be about their immediate reaction, but for the most part it is positive and I have noticed that they have many, many questions for us. It is in how we answer them that will help in their unfound quest for finding critical thinking, freethinking, humanism, etc.

IMHO the best way to get people to stop quoting the bible to you is to quote the bible to them. The Bible I use and the passages I used are all pretty well mined from:
It is a great site with every conceivable bull$hit story in the Baaaabul.

I usually just ask them how they would feel if everything they were taught turned out to be bullshit; that all their belief in a creator god was wrong. They always ask whatever do I mean, and I am in the door hehehe

That's a great approach. It whacks them right in the empathy bone, which they know they aught to have but don't.

My Dad is one of those bible quoters. In his emails and letters he always has a bible verse referenced. Not a quote from the bible, just the the book and verse.
Like the packaging at In 'n Out Burgers.
Anyway, a couple of months ago he had something from Judges referenced and I just decided to throw it back at him. Judges describes a hideous god in case you don't know. So I laid out my criticism and asked for a response. He said ok he'll do it, but he hasn't yet.
His latest email has something from Psalms in it which is also pretty easy pickings to rip apart.
So maybe if I keep this up, he'll get sick of it and stop quoting the bible to me. Since I came "out" as an atheist years ago, I've told him many times that I don't believe the bible, but that never stopped him. Maybe this new tactic will. Come to think of it, I hope he does muster up responses to my questions. It might be a fun debate.

The beef I have with bible quoters is that its like they constantly recite these verses as if everyone needed some holy book to tell them right from wrong. The other beef is that many quotes seem to be for the sole purpose of kissing up to god. A lot of these do come from Psalms. Its always the same 'God is powerful and almighty' crap.

I can't say that I have ever gotten mad a xtian for quoting or even speaking of their religion in anyway what so ever. I have had many-a-times been told that they believe "God sent them down to convert me" or "I pity you for not having Jesus in your heart". Perhaps I have on a few occasions laughed in their face but usually, like someone said before, the best way to argue what they are saying is to just throw it back in their face with another bible quote that says the opposite. The bible is full of contradictions and once they say "Well I don't believe that", debate is over. Even Christians know one bible verse is not more important than another.
If they are not afraid to say what they believe, you shouldn't fear refuting it. Lead by example. Show them a "sinner" can be a decent and educated person too. I'm not saying you are not decent or educated, you just have to prove to them your not to show them their morals and teachings are faulty.

I don't care that people quote bible verses to me. I do care when they hold you captive and don't want a rebuttal. It is one thing when you are at a wedding or a funeral, but it sickens me that people open their mouth and say things expecting you to blindly take it.

I'm always quoting the bible to the Christians that I know. Turns out that there are some verses they don't care for. Very few evangelicals seem to understand that according to Leviticus forgiveness for ones sins requires one to sacrifice a goat (it's very clear about this). They also don’t like the references to other gods in the old testament. Quoting the bible can be lots of fun. All the contradictions in the creation stories are really fun to discuss with a person who takes the bible literally.
