Hi!

Do you know any Y.E.C.'s? That stands for Young Earth Creationist.
Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki to find out more.

A lot of fundamentalist christians are YEC's because for them the book of Genesis is the literal and irrefutable account of God's creation of the universe. Also there's a primary and central line of fundamentalist argument that runs like this...
Jesus, the gospels and everything he did was real and is true.
He died not just to cleanse you of your own sin but also the sin which you've inherited from our original ancestors, Adam and Eve.
Therefore the Genesis account of their fall from grace is real and true.
Therefore ALL of Genesis is real and true.
Therefore anything that denies this (evolution, cosmology, geology, etc.) is wrong, sinful and part of Satan's elaborate web of lies.
This explains why YEC's maintain that Earth, the stars and the whole of the universe are no more that 6,000 to 10,000 years old.
They reject the scientific findings that indicate that the Earth is 1,000's of billions of years old and the universe much older than that.

"O.k., so what about the coal, gas and oil?" you ask.

Well, being an athiest I'm quite happy to drive my car, heat my home and cook with the gas, coal and oil that scientists say is millions and billions of years old.
If a committed YEC fundamentalist christian also does these things they should check very carefully where these resources come from. To them god placed these deposits of "non"-fossil fuels under the earth in ways that are NOT connected to any of the following...
* The slow formation of coal beds over millions of years by heat and pressure from the surrounding rocks.
* The slow separation of natural gas and oil over many millions of years.
* The slow transformation of plant material into lignite, bituminite and anthracite over tens and hundreds of millions of years.

Any YEC should ask his supplier/s where they get their oil, coal and gas from. Once they know which companies mined the stuff or bored the wells they should then ask them how they prospected for and found these deposits. I'll bet Exxon and all the others used methods of geology that owe nothing to Young Earth Creationism!

Now our YEC is in a jam.
To use these fuels that were discovered by athiestic scientific methods is hypocritical! They should only use the fuels that were found by applying Young Earth Creationist methods - after all anything that denies the divine creation of the world (like all of rational, logical geological science) is the work of Satan and evil men.

It's even worse if the YEC actually works for one of these industries!
They should resign immediately and give back all of the money they've earned from them.

So if you know anyone who's a Young Earth Creationist why not ask them about the coal, oil and gas they use and how it was found?
Don't forget to remind them that if they hold to the YEC line then they should use only YEC-approved fuels.
Have fun!

I know a YEC. He claims to distrust evolution like every YEC, but he really attacks geology. Geology should be the YEC's biggest enemy, not evolution.

Hi Cygnus!

You know, there's just s-o-o-o much hypocrisy in the YEC point of view that it makes me sick! What they consistently fail to do is match up the consequences of their faith-based ideas with the way they live in the 21st century. They're real happy to use cars, trains, planes, ships and everything else that runs on (non)fossil fuels but none of this technology owes anything at all to their silly philosophy.

Why not ask your YEC friend which supplier/s he uses for his gas, oil and electricity and how these corporations discovered the deposits of these fuels? Did they use Creationist geology or the regular athiest science to find them?

So how come athiestic science (relying on geological models that are 100's of millions of years old) is so darn good at finding new oilfields and coal seams? Surely the Creationist models (no more than 10,000 years old) are much more accurate and cost-effective because their 100% true - the bible confirms this, doesn't it?

I agree with what you say about geology being the BIG enemy to the YEC's. It undermines everything they hold to be true. (Sorry about the mining pun!)

You could also ask your friend why unrelated areas of science like cosmology (age of the universe) , astronomy (age of the stars & planets) ,
chemistry (half-life decay rates of radioactive elements) , particle physics,
nuclear power engineering, aerospace engineering and a dozen other branches of applied science ALL agree with the timescales complied by geologists the world over?

The premise I use in talking to these people is basically this.
"If you don't hold with what scientists are saying then don't use the services and products that rely on their science."

Let's see if he want's to give up anything because it doesn't square up with his unrealistic mind set.

Good hunting!
