I've just gotten this retro kick and I love it.. the nostalgia and all, it's great stuff Very Happy
Specifically, I'm playing C64 and Amiga games (I guess some of you haven't heard about the Amiga, sadly it never became popular in the states even though it was far superior to PCs at the time.. both for games and applications. Oh and I should also mention that they're both computers, not consoles).

Anyway, are there any other C64 or Amiga fans here? What are your favourite games? Feel free to post about other old computers or consoles too of course.

My favourite C64 games are the Last Ninja ones.. they were absolutely stunning for their time and it has aged well.. the gameplay is still fun and the music is amazing. Really good games that every C64 owner knew about.
Here is some information on this wonderful series :

http://lastninja.lemon64.com/main.htm

On the Amiga, I have tons of favourite games.. too many to list in this post.
I can mention a few though (and these are games that should be played by everyone Wink) -

It Came from the Desert - great adventure/arcade hybrid set in the 50s.. the theme is like one of those cheesy horror movies from back then. It's about these giant mutated ants terrorizing this small desert town named Lizards Breath.
The graphics are athmospheric and the music is also well done. And the storyline is good too as well as unlinear. The expansion (sort of a sequel but using many of the same locations) is great too.
Here are some screenshots :

Image Image
Image Image

I also love the Shadow of the Beast series.. known back then for its ridiculous difficulty level but addictive gameplay and great graphics and sound. They're sidescrolling (well they scroll in all directions) arcade/platform/puzzle games with great atmosphere and good controls.
Some people called them unplayable tech demos but I couldn't disagree more.. I've finished all three games in this series without cheating, it only takes a little practice and it's worth it.. these games are really fun (my favourite in the series is the second one).
Here are some screenshots from Shadow of the Beast 2 :

Image Image

Other games I should mention are -

The Lotus trilogy (greatest racing game series ever Very Happy)
Supercars 1&2 (top down racers)
Cannon Fodder (war has never been so much fun)
Turrican 1&2 (some of the best arcade games for the Amiga.. with some of the best music in any game.. ever)
Rick Dangerous 1&2 (wonderfully frustrating)
North & South (great in 2 player mode)
Moonstone (even greater in 2 player mode.. supports up to 4 players even)
The Lemmings games (but you all knew about these game already)
Pang! (Good arcade conversation of a bubble popper game.. much more fun than it sounds)
Wings (I think this is the most fun flight game ever, it's set in WW1 and the atmosphere and storyline are great!)

EDIT -
I forgot to mention that you can play these games on a PC using a very good emulator named winUAE (for Amiga games.. CCS64 for C64 games).. if anyone is interested in checking out some of these games, just PM me and I'll help you set it up Wink

Sonic Adventure 1/DX:Directors Cut
The game was a good game overall, the graphics, music, everything. I have to say, this and SA2 have the best graphics in a Sonic game, I couldn't tell it from real life almost. Plus, the gameplay was awesome, I have beat everyone's missions but big (Second level, mind you.). It was a great 5 hours to play... TIMES 6!! You get to play it six times with all the characters, but with different missions.

Sonic Adventure 2/Battle
What can I say, I like the adventure series, I wish they could continue them though. This game is a very fun challenge. 180 missions, only 96 complete so far. You can beat each one the stages 5 times. With 2 sides. (5x2)x18= ♥ . My favorite stage was City Escape. I played that level 120+ times I liked it so much. I liked the chao garden, it took up 8 blocks on my Gamecube memory card. That occupied me for about 100 hours.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2/& Knuckles
Ah... my favorite Geneses game. 12 stages with 2 or 3 acts in each level. And a boss fight at the end of each level. Good music, great gameplay, and something to calm you down. I never got Super Sonic yet, but I think that would be cool. The only thing I dislike about this game is that it doesn't let you save. All well, what can you expect from a 16-bit Megadrive game. You can also insert Knuckles in it, W00t!!

Sonic Rush

This game brings back the 2d elements of the Sonic series, including some 3d elements as well. Sonic Rush used better elements of 2d better than the Sonic Advance series, way to go Sonicteam! Along with a new playable character, Blaze!! Also, the sound was awesome!! Sonicteam must have been experimenting different kinds of music, and it worked!

Sonic CD

Great game, great gameplay, and great music. Not much to say about this game really except for the fact that there is time traveling, but that affected the storyline, not the gameplay, which was awesome. This game also endures the first appearance of metal Sonic.

Sonic R

What can I say, great racing game. A plain and simple Sonic racing game. No cars, no air boards, just racing. Even this game has, err... weird music, the game itself makes up for it, it's one of the most addicting Sonic games,

Don't care for:

Sonic Heroes
I don't totally hate this game, it was pretty fun acualy, I just hate the fact that I had to beat the every stage 4 times. If they took out the horrible sound, and the fact that you had to beat the game 4 times, I would probably take this game to the favorites list. I'd say it's worth about $40 US.

Sonic the fighters
Ehh... I played better arcade games. Sonic Allies fighting eachother for no apparent reason is very, very, dumb. But fun to say the least, even though the controls (Sonic Gems collection) are bad.

Sonic Drift 1/2
It's alright, if you like racing.around 2d, yet 3d cars that are 8 bit. It gets boring after an hour.

Dislikes:

(Most) Every Game Gear game!!
Yup, you read it right, I hate the primitive handheld consoles, it's always a pain to be playing those games. I don't even want to get started.

Sonic's Schoolhouse
WTF!?

Sonic Spinball
Horrible music and gameplay. I'd rather play the regular pinball that come with Windows XP. In this game, Sonic goes too slow when he falls.

Sonic Advance series
I HATE these games. They try to mimic the original but fail. Worse game physics ever!! I like how SA3 uses original music though.

Shadow the hedgehog
Don't listen to the game trailers, they make the game look better than it accually is. It would be better with more levels and less endings. And less cussing.

Ps:Is Sonic 3 & Knuckles reffering to Knuckles in Sonic 3, or does it mean both games?
Whoa, that's a lot of Sonic Shocked
The majority of Sonic fans 2 years ago were nintendo owners. Blinded by their own self properganda that Sony killed sega, when Sega killed itself. They all marched to the cube to play with Sonic.

Then last year something amazing happened... Sonic became multiformat, and started to sell better than before.

So now we came to the end of a console war and the three sides showed the world what they would go for...

Microsoft and Sony decided to push the boat out and make powerhouses of consoles... whereas nintendo decided to focus more on cheap party play games.

Big problem there...

Nintendo are never going to have the blockbuster titles that Sony and Microsoft will bring, They shall only have small gimicky fun games.

And here's a problem. Sega want Sonic to look stunning and be the next big thing. Can they do this on the wii? fRuck no.

Sonic 06 is the game to reboot the sonic series and the game to give sega one huge financial boost.

Sega have no choice but to sleep with the tech specs of both Sony and Microsoft because these consoles are the ones who can make Sonic cool again at the start of a new console war and give it's future competitors something to be judged against.

Sonics re-birth on the wii cannot happen this way. The wii does not have a hope in hell of showing off Sonic anywhere near the standard that the Xbox can, compare the wii to the PS3 and the difference is staggering.

Sega will not drop their high standards for Sonic 06 just to satisfy the small die hard nintendo fans who think Sonic is theres.

Sonic is the first big huge well known game to be released on the next gen consoles in his field/genre. He beat Mario crash and all the other big well known well established platformers to get a purely next gen game out there and he's lashing up everything that the 360 and PS3 can give him to make him look as well as act the part. for the last 7 years any new platform game that comes out is instantly compared to Mario 64, Sonic now however has a golden opportunity to beat Mario back down, Mario isnt welcome on the xbox, or the PS3, but Sonic is, Sonic can abuse all the might of the Xbox and PS3 to his hearts content to show off and dazzle the eyes of us all.

Oh yes we all know theres still issues with the camera and some other crash issues. But do screen shots show this? No they dont.

But do you remember E3 this year when Sonic 06 was being shown off and Wilfire (as it was known) has those 4 screen shots out? I remember a brilliant quote from one of our veteran members who said and I quote.

"Are those really wii graphics? They look poorer than gamecube graphics!"

Whereas Sonic 06 was being greeted with WOW! OMG! IT LOOKS AWSOME! I'M SO GETTING A PS3/XBOX!

Not to mention the already existing fanbase. Wether the nintendo die hards like it or not more and more Xbox/Sony fans are comming as I said last year and they'll have to get used to this and realise that sega has two new love bitches to have hot nights with.

So what have I been talking about?

Basically, wether you like it or not, the wii is a party console now, it;s main selling point is that you can have little parties with it. But the PS3 and Xbox360 are designed to kill you and everyone else unless you play it correct! ok exaggeration, but you get the idea. Sonic right now can use the PS3 and Xbox to utterly destroy anything thats come before him and give the next 6 years of videogames a standard to be judged against.

Do you think he can do that on the wii?

Let me ask you something...

How many people are saying, but secret rings on the Xbox/PS3? The answer, not many... not many at all.

I liked the old 2D Sonic games.. just recently bought both collections for the Gamecube (they have most of those old 2D games and some more).

I also bought the GBA ones.. I sort of liked the first one but it went downhill from there (the second one is just annoying!).

I've also played some arcade ones in MAME but I didn't like those much.

I do like Mario better though, I think Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 3 are some of the finest console platformers created... graphics aren't important to me at all, gameplay is where it's at for me Wink

Did you play these games when they were new btw? Perhaps you've heard of the C64 and/or Amiga as well then? The Amiga was popular around that time (I bought mine in 1990).

I'd just like to mention that this thread isn't only about games for old computers and consoles, you can post about old PC games as well.

Talking about old PC games.. I'll list some of my absolute favourites -

Gabriel Knight series (from Sierra Online) - best storylines I've ever seen in any game series... Jane Jensen is a storytelling genius, the Shakespeare of computer games Very Happy

Monkey Island series (from Lucasarts) - one of the first humor based adventure games series and it's really funny too.. but at the same time it's atmospheric and it has wonderful gameplay. Also very good music.

Space Quest series (from Sierra online) - another very funny adventure game series in a sci-fi setting. Incredibly fun games.

Quest for Glory series (from Sierra online) - great adventure/rpg hybrid (mostly adventure though) with great storylines and some clever puzzles.

My first console was a sega genesis with sonic 1 in 1991.

If there's one thing to describe the year in which our blue blur debuted onto the standard screen, it's gotta be be this quote: "Wow..." It's all because we got double-troubled by two Sonic games, both marking the beggining of a new era of gaming: the days of "Blast-Processing". Sonic was fast, and so were the critics as well. The Genesis game sold hotcakes like fire and stung Nintendo like a bee in the sales departmant, taking the Genesis to the top for 3 years more.
Image
The original Sonic the Hedgehog game had a simple, yet effective at the time, plotline to begin with. Sonic lived on South Island in peace with his furry friends, the Flickys. But it wasn't long before they started to suddenly dissapear. The problem was Dr. Eggman, an eccentric technological genius who wanted to conquer the peaceful South Island. And he would do so with robots operated by Flickys themeselves. Sonic was quick to action, and in the end, defeated Eggman and sent him packing for a downtime to rethink his strategy.

The game was adored for it's amazingly fast gameplay when compared to the Mario series, which to be frank is rather slow when compared to the original Sonic. It was also very fun and addictive, and makes you want to play the levels all over again. Another great aspect of the game was level design, and it was a wonderful set of levels indeed.

My All time favorite game franchise has to be Fallout.

Provided Interplay made on turd of a game for the Xbox and PS2, avoid that game at all costs.

The first two Fallout games are gold, Fallout Tactics was pretty good I thought but a lot of people had problems with it.

Since Interplay folded forever ago, there are plenty of fan sites out there. Most of them located in n Europe.

No Mutants Allowed

Bethseda Softworks picked up the license for Fallout 3, but I guess that's diverting the conversation since it's not really "retro" to speak of new works.

To see and play Fallout 3 (if ever) is why I still live.

I am an old school PC gamer, but for the C64 I did first play "Curse of the Azure Bonds" and "Hillsfar" AD&D games by SSI.

For the C64, I LOVED "Mail Order Monsters". Played it back in high school 16 years ago at my buddy's house.

I still think my favorite system is the SNES. Not extreme retro but still retro enough. Some of my favorite games, which i still play on an emulator or my still working SNES are:

Add the original Sega to that list.

Every once in a while, I'll bust out the original NES on my own ass.
