OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha City Council voted 6-0 to deny a request to rename part of a street in honor of a leader of the American Atheist movement.
Raymond Zbylut appeared before the council. He recently asked the city to post a commemorative street sign on 108th Street between West Maple Road and Bedford Street for Madalyn Murray O'Hare. O'Hare founded the American Atheists Group in the 1960s.
Zbylut said that O'Hare should be recognized for her efforts to defend the rights of atheists in the United States.
"It's not about stirring the pot, and it's not really about atheism -- it's about civil rights," Zbylut told the council on Tuesday.

Do you have evidence that there was bigotry involved? A lot of people including atheists don't even know who she is. Many atheists don't want her to be remembered as one That fact is easily backed up with a Google search.
The article said nobody spoke against the proposal at all. It simply was voted on. So what evidence do you have that it was anything other than a mundane choice that had to be made? I can just imagine 30 something people on the council looking at each other and asking Madlyn who?
Did you know she took the credit for getting prayer out of school and she wasn't the one? Did you know that there were six people, most of them theists who did get the prayer removed from school? |

I agree Sha Sha. I'm sure they refuse stuff like this often. It's possible they did discuss this "off-the-record" and already knew how they'd vote. We just don't know.
Honestly.. I don't really care either way. We have the internet now. |

As a Nebraskan I'm tired of this story. Omaha only cares about Omaha. Like other states with a megacity in it it's as if the city is a separate state. Witness Omaha newspaper's whineing about how American Idol kept showing the cornfield and not their cultural arts center or revamped park! Made me want to throw up.
The naming issue wasn't even up for debate though, Omaha doesn't like re-naming any streets otherwise it would never end. Rename one and you're guaranteed to be inundated with renaming requests. So the NO vote was more of a "No we will not rename the street" vote and not really a "No to O'Hare."
Excellent point ShaSha. 7th Day Adventists among others are ones who prefer separation of church and state. Of course other Christians will pull a no true Scotsman fallacy on you if you tell them that which is why points like that are a waste of time with them. |
