This guy is a pleasant change from all the theists who automatically hate those without a belief.

Later, he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme why he thought it was dangerous to be governed by reason alone.

He said saying that "supposedly faithless societies" ruled only by reason were like those created by Hitler and Stalin, ripe for "terror and oppression".

So we are to believe that hitler's germany and stalins russia are what you get when a society commits itself to being rational? And we are also to believe that religious socities cannot become ripe for terror and oppresion? How could anyone take this man seriously?

Quote:
"I want to encourage people of faith to regard those without faith with deep esteem because the hidden God is active in their lives as well as in the lives of those who believe."

Really? So the hidden god must have been active in the lives of hitler and stalin then. This god really is hidden.

Hmm, didn't see that. Sounds like a real loon now. It is well known that Stalin was a paranoid lover of power. The only reason for his attack on religion was to keep himself in control of the people's minds. And Hitler used Catholic resentment of the fact that Jews killed Jesus. (If they hadn't killed jesus, they wouldn't have their little savior now, would they?)

I notice that Google's running ads for Muslim dating sites here now. Little ironic, isn't it?

He may say to respect atheists, but he doesn't seem to have any good reasons for it. Everything else he said was pretty stupid too, if he thinks us atheists and agnostics can't form a society without going all hitler or stalin on it I'm not sure why he would respect us.

A few other things that jumped out at me:

Saying those societies were ripe for "terror and oppression". Which those were obviously, but it's just an ironic thing for a catholic clergyman to bring up.

Saying it's dangerous to be ruled by reason alone is just laughable. Do we all agree what hitler and stalin did wasn't reasonable? Okay, I guess they didn't do a good job at it then. I bet it wasn't because they were following what they felt.

And I'm not really sure what he meant by this, "They would much prefer not to see religion as neutral, but to neutralise it". I mean I have some ideas, but I want to think he's not silly enough to actually mean religion is neutral in that way.

Also I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I highly doubt any serious religious person respects atheists, and I know I don't respect the majority of religions especially not one like Christianity.

France has a fairly secular government that hasn't gone all Stalin or Hitler, so I'd say he's definately wrong.
