Hi to everyone. I'm having some trouble deciding on a major right now, and I'm interested in physics. I figure anyone in this section will know more about this than I do, so I was hoping you could give me some advice on this. I'm not exactly a mathematically or scientifically inclined person (I've been studying sociology thus far), but I've always had an interest in astrophysics. Anything y'all got for me I appreciate Smile

Well, besides dealing with a lot of interesting topics like black holes, quasars and dark matter, astrophysics is bound to include a good amount of math so if you are strong in stuff like calculus and physics, then you would maybe want to major in something like that. Are you already in a university or college? If so then you can take beginning classes on such a subject and decide if you really want to do it. That's what the freshmen year is for. For example, I would really like to major in Russian. The language is very hard to learn, so if I take beginning classes in it I can decide if its something I want to continue studying.

I'm currently a second year student at the University of Florida, and I've taken mostly social science classes, with one or two joke-math classes thrown in. I'm worried that its a little late to change my major so dramatically, but I can't help but be interested. I'm not really strong in math, which I know would be a problem, but I imagine I could learn it if I tried. I'm planning on taking a basic physics class next semester, with math included, so that should give me a pretty good idea.

Thanks for the advice!

I know that astrophysicists work a lot with computer models and math. But if its something you're really interested in, go for it.
