Wow.. that was some good writing, mirrors my thoughts exactly. Have you considered doing a talk show? Have we crossed paths before? We need to converse most definitely.

I'd like to see some of your fights. Too bad we don't live near each other.. I've been considering getting back into training. Honestly, just to boost my confidence level and get back into shape.

This is very cool. Are you guys following the BLACKS AND RELIGION thread? It's a good time to put some real effort into this issue.

So that's why I don't know any black atheists. Of course, then again, I've only known only a couple of white atheists. I pretty much live in the bible belt. I think your article really helped me understand how black atheists generally feel. Good thing there are people like Reggie. If there were more role models for atheism besides the cynical Hitchens and the taunting Dawkins, and especially black atheist role models, then I think a lot more people might open their eyes.

Excellent essay!

I'd be curious to know if the black atheists that you have known are mostly male. Do females "come out" also? If the family structure is mostly matriarchal, I imagine that a female black atheist might be in a better position to effect change than a male one. I don't know: I'm only speculating. I'm out of my depth here.

Honestly, I would have to say that they are mostly male. I was they must trying to tax my memory to see if I could recall ever meeting a Black female atheist. The last one I can remember meeting was 19 years ago. I wonder if there are any on this board?

Thanks, Reggie. I'm glad you liked it. I decided to finish the last few chapters of my book on Black Atheism online so I can hear all the counter arguments (if any) and answer them now before I finalize the manuscript. I'll be posting another this weekend after the San Diego Marathon, if I'm still conscious.

I don't think we've officially met but if you're a horror fan or a fight fan then I'm sure we've crossed paths. It would be great if you lived closer because Vegas is an intellectual wasteland. I'm slowing down on training fighters lately and getting more into the management side of things but I'd certainly take you on as a student if you lived here. I'll definitely email you so we can talk more..

I know how black atheists feel.

there aren't alot of hillbilly atheists either.

god and church is very central to our culture too.

Okay, it was under General Forums under General Discussion. You had me thinking I was going crazy looking for it on the main forum page. I found it, read it, and I think that thread has gotten so derailed that it should just die a quick painless death.

Oh, you aren't lying there. I'm married to one and her relatives...whoa, boy. Let's just say I don't exactly fit in. From her relatives in Lafayette Lousianna to her relatives in Arkansas to her closer relatives in the Sierra Nevadas her family reunions are something to behold.

I think there might even be fewer hillbilly atheists myself. I live in North Carolina, and it is still difficult to find even white atheists where I live.
