Nogods, weren't you allowed to make a non-religious affirmation? It seems odd that you weren't allowed that. I thought it was customary in the US.

Gerard,

I am not Anmerican. There are oaths, vows of a non-religious affirmation, but I was not willing to take any kind of oath. I said I would speak the truth, and that should be enough, but that I do not believe in taking oaths, as if one should accept two levels of honesty.

The judge, was not happy, and give me a short lecture about how oaths are necessary to ensue people told the truth. I responded, that I was pleased to know that in his court no one had ever lied, since they were under oath.

I think he got my point, though he was not happy. He did try to intimidate me by saying he would not allow me to give evidence. However. I reminded him that I had already informed him trhough my solicitor that I would not take an oath, so he could not claim to be surprised.

He settled for me giving evidence, but officially informing the jury that that I was not under oath. This was all along time ago now, it is rare that some of my 'bazarre' views ever get tested in real life.

I remember being 'conscripted' for jury service, in my late 20's, I wrote back informing them I was a raving puffter, so they may not want me in their court. That was the end of that matter. Though nowadays, that excuse would mean little, the trials of gaining greater gay rights;-)

nogods, did you miss my post to you above?

btw I agree with you regarding oaths, but I would have just taken the oath to avoid the stink as I don't think that is worth fighting over. LOL!
