Now, what I saw, and maybe I read too much into it. But what I saw was both Neil and Maddow making fun of the "good ole white boy club" WITH the white people in the clip in on the joke.
It stems from Neil's reclassifying Pluto 10 years ago as not being a planet and the "outrage" from fans of Pluto. The clip shows Neil going back to the town, speaking to the fans of the farmboy who discovered pluto 80pluss years ago.
NOTICE THE END OF THE CLIP, and keep in mind Neil is the only "black guy" in the barber shop. The last few seconds shows the "black guy" surrounded by white guys, in the barber's chair with a barber's razor to his throat and the VOICE INFLECTION of the white barber is "how dare you fuck with Pluto".
I bring this up because I do think the joke was intentional FOR GOOD REASON. If you look at the entire package, you have a smart black scientist paying homage to a white scientist.
Others didn't see what I saw, and maybe it is generational OR, maybe I really was seeing something that wasn't there. But when you think of boondock towns and barber shops, when I grew up, you didn't think of diversity.
I thought it was great because it showed white rural America laughing at it's horrible past and embracing science.
Maybe it was just me. In watching that clip I was just wondering what you think? Was I reading too much into that?

Man... it was all a set up! Notice the camera zoom. It was all in good fun! Glad to see they accepted him in Clyde Tombough's own back yard.
I can't wait to watch this tonight on PBS!

I got ripped for noticing that as being obvious that they were ripping on a bigoted past. Some were asking "why do you bring race up"? I love the left in their intent, but damn, do we have to lose our sense of humor?
That was Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, South Park, funny! I don't see how anyone could miss that.
As an aside a couple years ago when I first saw Neil on Youtube, his argument about the history of science and hitting ceilings I thought he was fantastic.
He basically described in his speech that throughout scientific discovery, many scientists would hit a ceiling and stop and then say, "There is nothing more so anything after God did it"
He said that he would not want any scientist in his lab with that attitude because it would preclude them from further discovery.
I want to watch this PBS special too.

THE LOCAL UNC PBS channel, on my cable company, DID NOT air the original March 2nd premier of "The Pluto Files". I called them up and they gave me a bullshit "fund drive" excuse for avoiding the 8pm prime time debut.
Then they sent me e-mails of when the repeats would air and THE BEST "Pluto Files" got on this UNC channel was 10pm. The rest are late night or the middle of the day.
I e-mailed Neil's planetarium with the full details of what UNC did.
NOW, I am not saying it was a conspiracy, but the climate pisses me off.
This country cares more about American Idol, and at the same time bitches RIGHTFULLY about lack of education, but wont put planetary science in prime time?
And here is the list of repeats, none in Prime time besides one 10pm slot.
