hey guys, i just wanted to say hey to my fellow free thinkers. i've been listening to the infidel guy show for about two years now, and i can't tell you how much i appreciate the work reggie has put into spreading word of free thought and rational thinking, to help counter all the ignorance and lack of reasoning out there.
growing up in a moderately christian home, praying and going to church was just a normal part of life for me, and those who didn't just weren't good people, or so i thought. i remember trying get my friends to go to church, and feeling sorry for those who didn't believe. i was taught that god is like our parent and loves us so much.
although i continued to believe up until about ten years ago, little by little, things just weren't adding up. like, ...if god is like our father, then why does he let bad things happen to us when he has the power to know all and do anything?...why does someone go to hell, no matter how good they are, just because they don't believe?
its like a dad who sees his kid drowning, but won't save him until he believes that he's his dad. wow, what a bad parent. the older i got, the more it seemed like god was more interested in humanity groveling and telling him how great he was than he was in helping us. i now sometimes jokingly refer to it as "the house of the holy butt kiss" lol, but never when speaking to christians.
i respect others rights to believe as they do and would not be so mean as to say something like that to them. besides i feel insulting someone only makes them defensive and less open minded to hearing out an opposing point of view.
i guess the thing that that finally shook me free of religion was all the sexism and homophobia...how can a loving god have such hateful and oppressive emotions? it just didn't make sense.
anyways sorry for rambling on for so long. this seems more like a blog than an intro. lol
i've only recently begun to read through the forum, but from what i've seen, its full of intelligent people who are not only atheists but also civil minded and not so quick to start slinging insults towards the believers. as seven of nine would say,"insults are irrelevant" lol.
btw reggie, i really like your borg avatar.
its a really great analogy for how religions try to "assimilate" everyone, and seven representing the the former "drone" who was encouraged to embrace her individuality and think for herself.
looking foward to talking to you guys. cya.

Personally, I do tend to hurl insults at believers. It's an impulsive thing. I do try to remain reasonable, otherwise. I think that makes up for the fun that I have at their holy expense.
Welcome, EE. Hoping that you have fun here. It's good intellectual exercise in a world that doesn't present a lot of that.

How would we learn if he didn't allow a few of us to drown? How could there be good if there wasn't evil? How could there be Good if there wasn't the D+evil? The Christian rationalization of the problem of evil is perplexing and mostly impotent... just like their imaginary friend.
