Whenever I debate a Xian and mention various Xians with failings (Andrea Yates, Billy Graham, etc.) they always say "but they're human and don't speak for Xinanity." This assumes that someone or something does.
However, if they say "Jesus" or "the Bible" it seems as if there are quotes that make them balk and say that the quotes are wrong, to be taken literally or figuratively or that it is out of context to the whole Bible (as if each book was written with all others mind! Morons!)
So, it is my guess that each Xian simply speaks for themselves as authority (or mimics their pastor or gay lover or whoever they think is really cool and Holy - nothing against gay sex, I just know many Xians are aghast at the mention of it )
My question to Xians: What contemporary figure can you point to that represents Xinanity as it is meant to be? Which person can you point to that I know exists and can relate to is some embodiment of the Xian message?
My guess is that they will say everyone is a sinner and no one is perfect but Jesus.
The problem is: Jesus didn't write a God-damned thing. How am I supposed to take Paul, Luke, John, Matt and Mark seriously if they can't point to ONE Xian who has been honest, sane, sensible, forthright, reasonable, logical, etc.?
Besides, all those writers (except Paul to a degree) were anonymous. What evidence do they have that a David Koresh-type didn't write those books?
It seems to me that Xinanity is self-defeating: if everyone is flawed then so are the people who write about it which makes it a flawed story.

David Eller points out, in "Atheism Advanced" that there is no Christianity, but rather Christianities, all being distinctly different from one another. This makes it pretty much impossible to refer to a central figure as a spokesman. When you compound the issue with hundreds of different Bible translations, each used as authority to back up their respective dogmas, holding anyone to anything that was supposed to have come from Christ (when even the original source may be merely legendary) seems hopeless.
Doesn't stop me from debating with Christians, though. If nothing else, it teaches them that there are other points of view out there.
