Religion: Man Asks Court to Change his name to ''In God We Trust''.
Blog
ZION, Ill. - Steve Kreuscher wants a judge to allow him to legally change his name. He wants to be known as “In God We Trust.”

Kreuscher says the new name would symbolize the help God gave him through tough times.

The 57-year-old man also told the Arlington Heights Daily Herald he’s worried that atheists may succeed in removing the phrase “In God We Trust” from U.S. currency.

World: Islamic states seek world freedom curbs-humanists
Blog
GENEVA, March 12 (Reuters) - Islamic states are bidding to use the United Nations to limit freedom of expression and belief around the world, the global humanist body IHEU told the U.N.'s Human Rights Council on Wednesday.

In a statement submitted to the 48-nation Council, the IHEU said the 57 members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) were also aiming to undermine the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

"The Islamic states see human rights exclusively in Islamic terms, and by sheer weight of numbers this view is becoming dominant within the U.N. system. The implications for the universality of human rights are ominous," it said.

The statement from the IHEU, the International Humanist and Ethical Union, was issued as the U.N.'s special investigator on freedom of opinion and expression argued in a report that religions had no special protection under human rights law.

Ambeyi Ligabo, a Kenyan jurist, said in a report to the Council limitations on freedom of expression in international rights pacts "are not designed to protect belief systems from external or internal criticism."

MOUNTING SUCCESS

But this argument is rejected by Islamic states, who say outright criticism -- and especially lampooning -- of religion violates the rights of believers to enjoy respect.

Politics: A Pragmatist and a Lobbyist on Atheism
Blog
From The New York Times:

ALBANY

The atheist lobby, in the blond, pregnant person of Jennifer Lange, waited with diminishing patience for the elevator in the Legislative Office Building.

Ms. Lange checked her watch one last time, then rounded a corner into the corridor and skipped down four flights of stairs. The back way to Assemblyman Richard L. Brodsky’s office was just one of those useful things she knew about the inner workings of Albany.

Ms. Lange’s mission on this Monday in early February was to scuttle a bill titled the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which she and every legislator on her agenda called in their common insiders’ slang Rifra. Of the nearly 10,000 pieces of legislation introduced annually in the New York State Legislature, the act was one of only several dozen brought under the lead sponsorship of the Assembly’s speaker, Sheldon Silver. It was not going to be an easy target.

Humor: Bill Maher on 'Intelligent Design'.
Blog
Bill Maher's New Rules:

It just seems pathetic to be so insecure about your biological superiority, to a group of feces-flinging, rouge-buttocked monkeys, that you have to make up fairy tales. Like we came from Adam and Eve, and then cover stories for Adam and Eve like, intelligent design. Yeah, leaving the Earth in the hands of two naked teenagers. That's a real intelligent design.

I'm sorry, folks, but it may very well may be that life is just a series of random events. And that there is no... master plan. But enough about Iraq. Let me instead restate my thesis. There aren't necessarily two sides to every issue. If there were, the Republicans would have an opposition party.

And an opposition party would point out that even though there's a debate, in schools, and government, about this, there is no debate among scientists. Evolution... is supported by the entire scientific community. Intelligent design is supported by guys online to see "The Dukes of Hazzard."

Religion: To Avoid Closure, Texas Creationist Museum to Auction Off Mastodon Skull
Blog
From MSNBC:
By Paul J. Weber
updated 4:53 p.m. PT, Thurs., Jan. 17, 2008

DALLAS - A Texas museum that teaches creationism is counting on the auction of a prehistoric mastodon skull to stave off extinction. The founder and curator of the Mt. Blanco Fossil Museum, which rejects evolution and claims that man and dinosaurs coexisted, said it will close unless the Volkswagen-sized skull finds a generous bidder.

Church and State: Is Religion a Threat to Democracy?
Blog
Today comes word that  Presidential Candidate and Pastor, Mike Huckabee Suggested that the [US] Constitution be amended to 'God's Standards'. But according to this article from Mother Jones, the use of Religion in Politics is not confined to just one party.

From the Article:
Change may, or may not, turn out to be the Pied Piper of 2008 for the American voter, but it surely will remain the Scylla and Charybdis of twenty-first century presidential politics. So watch out… be consistent… go (like the Republican candidates) for the "eternal" verities… and, while you're at it, consider the nature of religious consistency in politics, because this election is, so far, not just the non-flip-flop election, but the "faith" election in which even Hillary Clinton has a "Faith, Family and Values" team on her campaign staff, while John McCain claimed on the campaign trail that he thought the Constitution had established a "Christian nation"… but let Tomdispatch regular and professor of religion Ira Chernus tell you the rest.

Ethics: The Moral Instinct
Blog
From The New York Times Magazine:
By STEVEN PINKER
Published: January 13, 2008

Which of the following people would you say is the most admirable: Mother Teresa, Bill Gates or Norman Borlaug? And which do you think is the least admirable? For most people, it’s an easy question. Mother Teresa, famous for ministering to the poor in Calcutta, has been beatified by the Vatican, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and ranked in an American poll as the most admired person of the 20th century. Bill Gates, infamous for giving us the Microsoft dancing paper clip and the blue screen of death, has been decapitated in effigy in “I Hate Gates” Web sites and hit with a pie in the face. As for Norman Borlaug . . . who the heck is Norman Borlaug?
Yet a deeper look might lead you to rethink your answers. Borlaug, father of the “Green Revolution” that used agricultural science to reduce world hunger, has been credited with saving a billion lives, more than anyone else in history. Gates, in deciding what to do with his fortune, crunched the numbers and determined that he could alleviate the most misery by fighting everyday scourges in the developing world like malaria, diarrhea and parasites. Mother Teresa, for her part, extolled the virtue of suffering and ran her well-financed missions accordingly: their sick patrons were offered plenty of prayer but harsh conditions, few analgesics and dangerously primitive medical care.

There is no God, and you know it
Blog
I received this really cool email today from a new listener. I have received a number of these ever since the release of my youtube TINGAYKI series.

Hi. My name is Garrett. I just recently watched your video "There is no god and you know it" and I am amazed. You completely made sense of everything. Even some of my friends thought that you have explained this more than they ever could. We never thought of actual mythology. Of how religion was Mythology. I just want to say thank you for clearing all of this up for me. I was debating on whether god was real or not. I was looking for sufficient evidence. And I looked at Youtube and saw your video and i was actually shocked. Thank you again. (You are very welcome Garrett. Always my pleasure to help others.)

Oops, I said, YourTube at first! tee-hee.
