| I believe that it did very well overseas, but I also heard that the filmmakers had sold the foreign rights outright, which means that it will cover some of the costs, but maybe not as many as if they had kept them themselves. It was #1 in the US the first weekend, but didn't make as much as they had expected and it was a very big-budget film.
I thought they sanitized the book a bit too much but apart from that it was a very good movie. Of course, the really "objectionable" stuff comes in the second and third books, and is so integral a part of the plot that it's going to be awfully hard to take it out, assuming that they do decide to film them. If they don't, all I can say is that they had better restore the original ending (which was too much of a "downer" for the sneak preview viewers) on the DVD. |
