At least two people have reportedly been killed in Tibet after violence erupted during the biggest protests against Chinese rule in two decades.
The Dalai Lama has appealed to China not to use force against protesters and "address the long-simmering resentment of the Tibetan people."
A British journalist at the scene told Japan's Kyodo news agency that rioters had taken control of the centre of the capital.
Radio Free Asia said Chinese police fired on rioting Tibetan protesters, killing at least two.
Other reports claim the death toll is higher, telling of clashes with security forces that resulted in numerous injuries.
Gordon Brown said European Union leaders were "very concerned about what is happening" at a press conference in Brussels.
The US ambassador in Beijing has also backed the call for China to exercise restraint.
The reports of shots being fired were confirmed by the American embassy in Beijing, which said it had been informed by tourists in the city.
Witnesses said police who were using tear gas to break up the protests were attacked by the crowd.
